The International Military Tribunal opened under the auspice of Stalin's favorite judge Iona T. Nikitschenko on
November 20, 1945 with the reading of the Indictment...the first charge alleging the 21 defendants all belonged to a criminal conspiracy to commit Crimes against Peace, War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity.
The conspiracy charge provided the prosecution with numerous advantages. For one, every member of a conspiracy is responsible for the criminal acts of others taken in furtherance of the conspiracy even if the member did not know of the criminal act. So a conspiracy charge can dramatically enhance the consequences of a guilty verdict for any single defendant. For another, evidentiary rules are relaxed for the statements of co-conspirators, making it easier for prosecutors to present incriminating evidence.
The members of the alleged conspiracy were huge, The Tribunal ruled that "A trial of any individual member of any group or organization the Tribunal may declare (in connection with any act of which the individual may be convicted) that the group or organization of which the individual was a member was a criminal organization.
This allowed the presentation of atrocities that the none of the 21 defendants knew about or participated in.
For example, Indictment charged "the Nazi conspirators mercilessly destroyed even children. They killed them with their parents, in groups, and alone. They killed them in children's homes and hospitals, burying the living in the graves, throwing them into flames, stabbing them with bayonets, poisoning them, conducting experiments upon them, extracting their blood for the use of the German Army." The American prosecution popped up with alleged human skin lampshades and
a shrunken head. The Soviets presented evidence of a human soap factory and evidence that the Germans had
committed the Katyn killings. Films of victims of allied bombings were presented as German crimes. The defendants
had no way to disprove or even challenge the show.
All this was eagerly repeated by the world press and generally incorporated into the ruling of the Tribunal.
The Judgment rendered by the Nuremberg Tribunal has been the basis of much false history.
Although the findings of the Tribunal have been largely revised, its affects still contaminate our history books.

Good thread, we are long overdue a good thread on the Nuremberg Farce. I will re-join later but just to kick things off on the Human Soap aspect, it was not only the Soviets - the British Chief Prosecutor Sir Hartley Shawcross doubled down on the Human Soap introduced by the Soviets, and explained to the court that it was indeed claimed to be made from Jewish victims

Meanwhile, the mass murder of Jews at Auschwitz and the other extermination centers was becoming a State industry with byproducts. Bales of hair, some of it, as you will remember, still plaited as it has been shorn off the girls' heads, tons of clothing, toys, spectacles, and other articles went back to the Reich to stuff the chairs and clothe the people of the Nazi State. The gold from their victims' teeth, 72 transports full, went to fill the coffers of Funk's Reichsbank. On occasion, even the bodies of their victims were used to make good the wartime shortage of soap (Document Number USSR-272).

In the file describing the operations of the Task Force A there is a map of the Baltic countries showing the number of Jews that were living in each state who were to be hounded out and killed (Document Number L-180). Another map shows the results achieved after those 2 or 3 months' work-a total of 135,567 Jews destroyed. In another report on their operations during October 1941 it is proudly stated that they continued "on the march with the advancing troops into the sectors which have been assigned to them" (Document Number 2273-PS)."
"In February 1942, in Heydrich's activity and situation report on the Einsatzkommandos in the U.S.S.R. of which a copy was addressed to Kaltenbrunner personally, it was stated:
"We are aiming at cleansing the Eastern countries completely of Jews.... Estonia has already been cleared of Jews.
"In Latvia the number of Jews in Riga, of which there were 29,500, has now been reduced to 2,500" (Document Number 3876-PS)."
Seems quite reasonable for the court to conclude the Nazis had been mass murdering Jews, when they left behind all of those, and more, documents recording the mass murder of Jews.

After cremation the ashes were used for fertilizer, and in some instances attempts were made to utilise the fat from the bodies of the victims in the commercial manufacture of soap.

Today no Believer "scholar" believes these vile propaganda tales but few openly criticize the Nuremberg Tribunal.

But can you imagine being a defendant sitting in the Courtroom listening to the absurd testimony and not being able to challenge it?
Worse would be hearing the judgment rendered by the murderer Judge Niktochenko with all the pompous ceremony.

It is notable that the Soviet sourced evidence is less reliable and more problematic than the evidence provided by the West. The Nazis on trial would have still be convicted, if there was no Soviet sourced evidence.
The Nazis on trial did not challenge the human soap claim, as none of them were directly accused of any involvement in the making of such. None of them challenged the mass killing of Jews, providing exculpatory evidence that was a hoax and in fact there had been a resettlement programme.

One of the many travesties at the Show Trials was the use of a psychologist to influence the defendants, soften them up for confessions, and...of course...write a self-serving "tell all" book. G. M. Gilbert broke many ethical rules of psychology and was an important part of the Show Trial Team.
My principal duty was to maintain close daily contact with the prisoners in order to keep the prison commandant, Colonel B. C. Andrus, aware of the state of their morale, and to help in any way possible to assure their standing trial with orderly discipline. 1 also collaborated with the psychiatric commissions and the prison psychiatrist* in any mental examinations that were required.
I was allowed free access to the prisoners at all times, from the time of the indictment up to the time of the execution. This made possible a study of their reactions under controlled conditions for a whole year. The method was simply that of casual conversation in my role as psychologist and liaison man, supplementing the trial itself as a vehicle for examining the Nazi system and the men who made it. 1 never took notes in their presence, but kept a careful record of my conversations and observations, setting down my notes
