It seems like most american soldiers at the time held unfavorable views of Jewish people. FDR even avoided meeting with Jewish organizations and admitting jewish refugees because it was politically dangerous for him.
My guess is American men were simply fighting because their country had called on them to do so. The world at the time was extremely nationalistic.

They fought for the same propaganda schtick they fight every time, that is, the fiction of a freedom-hating malevolent tyrant who is allegedly out for world domination and therefore threatens to destroy their own freedom if he's not destroyed before doing so. A mandatory narrative when your ministry of armies is called the Department of Defense...
