Being moderately below the threshold of recommended 8-11 kg (for infectious/high-stakes circumstances) per corpse would be sufficient to create sanitation problems. To suggest dramatic under-ordering contradicts German doctrine ("two hand-widths, embedded") and practice at comparable camps (notable layering at AR camps), and defeats the purpose of ordering at all. Furthermore, Chelmno allegedly operated for about six months before the "epidemiological crisis" impeded operations, suggesting some significant containment during this period.

Also, here is a statement from a Chelmno escapee 'Szlamek', dated 16 Jan 1942:
"Od piątku zaczęto polewać groby chlorkiem, gdyż czuło się silny odór rozkładających się ciał."
(Beginning on Friday, we started to pour/flood chloride on the graves because of the strong odor from the decomposing bodies.)

Note the use of "polewać" ("pour/drench/flood"; as opposed to a word like "posypywać" [to sprinkle] or "sypać" [to dust]). This above witness statement (from January 1942) was at a time when only a few thousand Jews are said to have been transported to (or through) Chelmno, and before the Spring thaw in which it would be expected for decomposition and sanitation to become increasingly relevant as temperature rises. Yet, already, graves were 'flooded' with lime/Chlorkalk.

The massive quantities of Chlorkalk eventually used is further reflected in a 2003 excavation:
During archaeological drilling in 2003 at mass grave #1, an "active substance destroying rubber gloves" (czynną substancję niszczącą gumowe rękawiczki) was observed in the soil. The substance was not analyzed further.

In other words, the Chlorkalk that was applied in 1941-2 remains chemically active in the soil, 60+ years after application.

Above all, Germany was not stupid -- sanitation was taken seriously. Here is a 24 Mar 1942 instance where the SS at Chełmno bought 150 copies (for distribution) of an official German government circular on fighting typhus:
"24 marca: zapłata w wysokości 7,98 RM za 150 sztuk okólnika Urzędu Zdrowia Rzeszy (Reichsgesundheitsamt) na temat walki z tyfusem"

To emphasize sanitation and order Chlorkalk by the tons as of mid-1942 makes zero sense if this material is to be dramatically under-applied anyway by some tenfold of what the protocol recommends. An under-application of some 20-30% (of the recommended ~8-11 kg/corpse) at this time could perhaps be an unintended result due to delays or shortages, and could explain reports of stench or epidemiological concerns. But a claim that some 5-10% or less of the needed amount was even ordered is simply absurd.

That's around 24 kg per body, yeah? Quite a lot. Though the archaeologists reported that lime was in fact used "usually in quantities lower than prescribed".

(I'm assuming a staio in this specific place and time really was 24.36 L, which is questionable because it was not fully standardized. For example Grokipedia has a staio of lime as 48.94 L in nearby Parma. I'm also assuming a 1 g/cm^3 bulk density, whereas vendors today estimate it from 0.5-1.3 g/cm^3, another aspect of great variance.)

Unfortunately, while the 6 kg figure I used may still be in the right neighborhood, I cited the wrong card for it.

Chlorkalk is made from slaked lime but functions differently, with only ~13% actual/slaked lime by mass, per the same sources I already shared. WHO never claimed that the bulk mass is hydroxide (that appears to have been pure AI slop that I overlooked :roll: ).

As lime, Chlorkalk is several times weaker per kilogram. The "two hands width" was specifically "lime / ash / charcoal". Putting those layer thicknesses onto Chlorkalk invoices was also problematic.

That is the part to drop. It was what produced the 3–6,000 estimate from packing density and 'lime mattresses'. That said, the estimated kg of Chlorkalk needed may still be in the range of ~6 kg.

A German book for this chemical is Kliewe, Leitfaden der Entseuchung und Entwesung (1937), the period handbook for disinfectors. Chlorkalk there is a chlorine disinfectant, not a covering lime. For cesspits:

That is 1:10 of Chlorkalk to pit contents — the same ratio I used, now on the right commodity, from a German manual, for this powder, in a pit of organic matter. For ~55 kg of contents that is ~5.5 kg.

Worth noting that a cesspit is a slurry you can mix and a stacked grave is not. Chlorine is eaten on the first organic surfaces; interiors never see it. If the job is actually to treat the biomass, interleaved layers are required and you need more mass, not less. Using Kliewe’s 1:10 against corpse weight is therefore still conservative relative to stacked-body sanitation. The orthodox way to stretch the ordered amounts to over 70–100k is to assume they only "dusted the lids", contrary to 'Szlamek'.

Also, I was wrong with the 54,545 kg calculation for total Chlorkalk shipments. Hans' own SK deliveries are actually less -- just ~37,000. I added every lime-ish line in his appendix, including Doc. 40's 50 barrels (requested only, not shown delivered) and items he does not assign to the Kommando. His Table 2 (bills he treats as SK Kulmhof deliveries):

There is also the matter of logistics/deliveries worth noting further. The first Chlorkalk delivery post-February wasn't even until March 9th, and it doesn't indicate anything suggesting its intent for Chelmno (unlike most other docs which at least have an 'S', claimed to mean 'Sonderkommando'). This is a last-minute request for incredibly low quantity (800 kg) of Chlorkalk, for a plan that should entail hundreds of tons of this same substance up-front. This is in addition to the missing tens of thousands of tons of wood, like in other AR camps.

There is also the matter of grave area: 5,400m2, per Hans' endorsed findings at Chelmno. This requires only a single layer of about 1-2 centimeters of Chlorkalk across this entire area. Either the graves were not actually that large, or the Chlorkalk ratio makes even less sense for orthodoxy.

If Chlorkalk was in any way thought to be effective at covering-up a mass grave (e.g. dissolving corpses), it has zero such effect (and would stretch the ratio even further, if this was the intent). Germany would have known the difference (slaked lime was cheaper and more widely available, so choosing Chlorkalk -- a disinfectant -- in itself has meaning). Whether used for latrines, odor, general typhus prevention, or disinfecting corpses (and to what extent or what specific location for each) remains unclear.
